Biography
Stephen Philip Jones was born on September 3rd, 1955 in West London. Coming from a difficult home life, and uninterested in school, he decided to form a band with friends Paul Cook and Wally Nightingale. Jones’ early musical inspirations included Iggy & The Stooges, and glam rock icons like Roxy Music and David Bowie. Jones co-founded The Strand (named after a Roxy Music song) with Paul Cook and Wally Nightingale in the early 1970s. The Strand, precursor to the Sex Pistols, is where Jones first learned to play guitar. After dropping Nightingale in the mid-70s, the band changed its name The Swankers.
In 1972 Jones went on to co-found the Sex Pistols with Paul Cook, Glen Matlock, and later Johnny Rotten. Although they only released one album, "Never Mind The Bollocks," the Sex Pistols went on to become one of the most influential punk bands of the 20th century. The eventual breakup of the Pistols led to Jones' releasing his first solo album in 1987. 1989 brought a second album, and Jones continued his work within the music scene until 1996 when not only did he have the Neurotic Outsiders but also the Sex Pistols re-united for a world tour. As well as continuing session and production work Steve flirted with acting, appearing in films and TV shows before finding what he describes as his "first proper job" as a DJ on the Los Angles-based station Indie 103.1FM.
His hugely popular “Jonesy’s Jukebox” radio show, which began in 2004, is what catapulted him to a second stardom. Steve's light-hearted approach and non-playlisted musical selections - anything and everything from classic rock to new bands, back through disco and punk - made the show a breath of fresh air on commercial Los Angles radio. Many high-profile actors and musicians have appeared on the show, including each member of the Sex Pistols. "Jonesy's Jukebox" will soon be brought back to its radio glory on IAMROGUE.com.
